Located along the Mediterranean Sea, IAU allows students to experience the culture of the south of France. The mild climate, famed cuisine and the arts give the Mediterranean region a distinct feel, unique from anywhere else in the world. While the city of Aix offers access to traditional French culture in an intimate setting, it still maintains the charm and elegance of a large metropolis. The quaint town is known for its beloved painter, Paul Cézanne, who painted the surrounding rolling landscape. Local excursions during both semester and summer programs provide students with an enhanced awareness of Provençal culture while giving them a unique and unparalleled French experience.

IAU's campus in Aix is centrally located just a few doors down from local French universities, shops, cafes and more in the historic part of town. The facilities have been completely renovated with modern amenities to suit the needs of the 21st century college student. IAU Aix employs a full-time student affairs and academic affairs staff to advise, place, house, and otherwise support incoming students.

IAU offers students a variety of programs and experiences:

  • The School of Humanities & Social Sciences offers coursework in subject areas such as psychology, political science, comparative literature, art history, studio art, business, economics, philosophy, education, history, archaeology, civilization, theatre, government and the French language from the beginning to the advanced levels. Courswork is taught in English and French. In addition, students who have an advanced level of French proficiency (at least the equivalent of 4 college semesters of the French language) are eligible to take and transfer credits from the University of Aix-Marseille.
  • The Marchutz School of Fine Arts is open to students of all majors, skill levels, and backgrounds, and offers an immersive experience in painting, drawing, art history, and art theory, with excursions to Paris, Giverny, Venice, and the Vaucluse. Students participating in other programs may choose to take elective courses at the Marchutz School.
  • The School of Business and International Relations gives students the opportunity to take business courses while studying abroad in France. IAU business courses are approved by Fairfield University, an IAU partner institution whose Dolan School of Business is accredited through AACSB, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
  • The French Honors Program is designed for French Majors or other students with demonstrated advanced-level French, interested in a comprehensive linguistic and cultural immersion program. The French Honors Program comprises three components which are complementary and aim to enable students to make the most of their studies in Aix-en-Provence.
