Non-SUNY Study Abroad

Fredonia, United States (Map)

Participation in a non-SUNY program is undertaken independently from the Office of International Education at SUNY Fredonia.

Prior to departure, students must ensure that Fredonia will accept credit from the institution issuing the transcript (school of record). To do this, you will need to contact Department Chairs who oversee academic areas of courses you will be taking. Each department chair will decide whether courses will transfer back for their specific departments, so multiple approvals may be required if you are taking courses abroad that are in different academic disciplines. Credits earned abroad are shown as transfer credits on your official Fredonia transcript. You are responsible for ensuring that an official transcript from the school of record is sent to the Registrar's Office upon conclusion of the study abroad program.

Plan in advance for any financial aid procedures. Contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss your options and their impact on your financial aid eligibility, to inform any decisions you make.

For students studying abroad during Fall, Spring, or Academic Year: There are two specific forms that you will need to fill out for this process: You will register for classes directly with the overseas campus, then complete the Undergraduate Not Returning Form through Academic Advising Services. At the beginning of the overseas term, complete and submit the Reinstatement Form with the Registrar's office, which allows them to return to Fredonia to pursue their degree following the semester abroad. (Students participating in non-SUNY programs over J-Term or Summer do not need to complete these forms and can follow only the steps outlined above).

Special notes on participation in non-SUNY programs:

  • Students are encouraged to meet with the Financial Aid office to discuss the possibility of using aid on a non-SUNY program.
  • Students are required to meet with their academic advisor to discuss how the non-SUNY program fulfills degree requirements.
  • Students are responsible for having their overseas transcript sent directly to the Registrar's office.
  • Coursework taken on a non-SUNY program will appear as transfer credits on a student's academic record; these courses do not count towards a student's cumulative GPA.
