This summer study abroad course is an opportunity to study Renaissance painting, sculpture, and architecture for fifteen days in Italy with day trips to Fiesole, Siena, Arezzo, and two days of hiking and relaxing on the Mediterranean coast at Cinque Terre.

The Arts of Italy course introduces the student to the cradle of Renaissance culture and the philosophy of Humanism. Our classroom will be the museums, churches, and streets of the famous city states in Tuscany. Follow in the footsteps of Giotto, Dante, Donatello, Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo and discover the rich cultural heritage of Italy.

The instructor of this course is Peter Tucker, Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at Fredonia.

General Course Information:
This course will introduce students to the Renaissance visual arts and history of Italy spanning two thousand years. The course provides a thorough grounding in the major art works of painting, sculpture, architecture and the artists involved, adding the concrete dimension of direct observation and personal experience of the places and motifs that informed the various art movements.

The study and travel abroad includes readings, discussion, a daily journal, and a written interpretation of themes and ideas in art. Students will:

  • Attend pre-classes for academic and cultural preparation
  • Complete the pre-trip assignments​
  • Maintain a journal with daily assignments
  • Complete a post-trip reflection paper
Fredonia students will earn 3.0 credits of INED 390 or ARTH 399 for successful participation in the program. Other SUNY students can work with their home campus to transfer the course in for credit.

Program Costs:

Students may be able to use financial aid to support program costs. Following acceptance, students should meet with the Financial Aid office at their home campus to understand financing options.


Payment Deadlines:

  • March 1: $150 Deposit Deadline
  • April 1: Program Fee Deadline
  • May 1: Tuition Payment Deadline (for students at other SUNY campuses, tuition deadline may differ)

Travel Information:

Students travel together to/from Toronto (YYZ) to Florence (FLR).


 

 

Accommodations:

Housing in Florence will be in a hostel near the Palazzo Rospigliosi - Pallavicini. Students share rooms and a full breakfast included. Housing in Cinque Terre will be in a guest house close to the beach.
