Northumbria University is located in the cosmopolitan city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Newcastle, renowned as a student city (one in six of the population is a student), is regarded as one of the 10 most creative cities in the world, as well as one of the new cultural Mecca's to rival New York, Paris and Milan. Students from all over the world have helped NU gain an excellent reputation for quality in teaching. NU offers coursework in 17 subject areas and internships for qualified students.

Northumbria offers students access to its impressive Sport Central facilities, a bustling Students' Union, and a number of support and wellbeing resources.

Course Information:
Students usually enroll in 40 - 60 UK credits (12 - 20 US credits) per semester; 10 UK credits = 3.0 US credits. More information on coursework is available online.

Many students choose to take the Colloquium on British Culture, a course specifically for study abroad students that looks at the history and culture of Northern England. This course includes excursions to sites around Newcastle that have significant cultural or historical significance.

Fredonia students wishing to use coursework taken abroad toward degree requirements should follow the Overseas Course Approval process. Grades for courses taken abroad will count toward the student's cumulative GPA.

Other SUNY students should discuss credit transfer policies with the Study Abroad Office at the home campus.

Accommodation:
Students live in on-campus housing and have the option to purchase a meal plan, though most students choose to cook their own meals in their flat. Most students live in single rooms with shared kitchen spaces. Apartments are very close to campus and within easy walking distance to Newcastle's city center. Housing costs are paid at a weekly rate directly to Northumbria.

More information on accommodation can be found online.

Arrival Information:
Students can fly into Newcastle (NCL) based on the arrival period set by Northumbria. Students will be met at the airport by Northumbria staff on the day of pickup and be transported to their accommodation. Students must book this service in advance and can find out more information online.

Students may also book flights to London or Edinburgh and take a train to Newcastle. If students choose to book flights to other UK cities, they are responsible for all costs associated with getting to Newcastle.

Upon arrival, students will participate in a mandatory orientation to introduce them to campus and cultural life.

Program Cost:

Students may be able to use financial aid to support program costs. Following acceptance, students should meet with the Financial Aid office at their home campus to understand financing options.

Scholarships:
Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships to support their study abroad program.

Student Visa:
US citizens participating in just one semester of study in England are not required to apply for a student visa prior to departure; students participating in a year-long experience will be required to apply for a student visa. US citizens are able to travel easily throughout most of Europe and do not require a visa for most travel.
