IAU's campus in Barcelona is centrally located in the downtown Plaça de Catalunya area in the Gothic Quarter in close proximity to many of Barcelona's famed attractions. The facilities have been completely renovated with modern amenities to suit the needs of the 21st-century college student. IAU Barcelona employs a full-time student affairs and academic affairs staff to advise, place, house, and otherwise support incoming students.

Located along the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Barcelona allows students to experience the culture of Catalunya. The mild climate, famed cuisine and breathtaking arts give the Mediterranean region a distinct feel, unique from anywhere else in the world. Students in Barcelona will have the opportunity to practice their language skills in the classroom and also with native Spanish speakers through language exchange programs and cultural events. Over the course of their time abroad, students can expect to participate in field study trips associated with specific classes, study tours, and day trips, as well as cultural activities like Catalan cooking courses, sports activities, and cava tastings.

IAU's Barcelona campus offers students coursework in a variety of disciplines and programs:

  • The Spanish Honors Program is designed for Spanish majors or other students with demonstrated advanced-level Spanish, interested in a comprehensive language and cultural immersion program. As part of the program, students will enroll in all upper-division Spanish language courses. Students in the Spanish Honors Program have access to courses taught at the local university as well.
  • The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a wide breadth of course disciplines to students from all majors and minors. Prior knowledge of Spanish is not required as courses are offered in English, though students are required to take a minimum of one course in Spanish language, and students with background in Spanish language will have the opportunity to enroll in courses taught at the local university.

Program Dates:
Program dates are dependent upon the session students sign up for.

For more detailed information on program dates, please see the IAU academic calendar.

IAU offers a number of summer study abroad options at their Barcelona campus. Course availability and credit hour enrollment is dependent upon the summer session they enroll in. Students can participate in internships as part of their semester at IAU. There is no language requirement for participation in internships, but students with Spanish proficiency may have more placement options available. More information on internships is available online.

Fredonia students wishing to use coursework taken abroad toward degree requirements should follow the Overseas Course Approval process. Grades for courses taken abroad will count toward the student's cumulative GPA.

Other SUNY students should discuss credit transfer policies with the Study Abroad Office at the home campus.

Accommodation:
Students in Spain have the option to be housed in either shared homestays or in shared apartments. Students who select the homestay option will live with Spanish families (who may also house other international students), which includes daily breakfast and dinner. Students in shared apartments will be responsible for their own meals and may share an apartment with other international students. Students may request roommates on the housing application form and IAU will do its best to accommodate such requests.

More information can be found online.

Arrival Information:
Students can fly into Barcelona (BCN) or Madrid (MAD) on the program arrival date set by IAU. Students will be met at the airport by IAU staff on the day of pickup and be transported to their accommodation.

Upon arrival, students will participate in a mandatory orientation to introduce them to campus and cultural life.
